Patterdale Terrier Champions bred for hunting, show,
working, performance, and companions for more than twenty-five years.
Mettrick Quarter Horses LLC and MQH Kennel, established in 1976, are owned and operated by Jon and Pamela Mettrick. Jon teaches psychology at the local university; Pamela is in charge of daily operations around the ranch and kennel.
Married for over thirty years, we share the love of animals. Together we have participated in breeding, raising, and training animals and their handlers for showing at a national level. Producing many champions, canine, equine, and equestrienne. The involvement has also extended into movies, TV, and commercial work.
We were introduced to fell terriers in the 1980s. Our first Patterdale terrier was sired by Nuttall's Ricky and out of Nuttall's Raven, the little black dog was more than we expected, cleaning our ranch and navel orange grove of numerous types of vermin. Her courage and tenacity amazed us. Our family quickly found that our ranch and our lifestyle would not be complete without Patterdales.
MQH Kennel was already established as a top breeder of champion English mastiffs, having bred MCOA National Specialty Class Winners, Best in Sweeps, Best Puppy in Show, as well as numerous MCOA Health Awards. Breeding Patterdales became my next passion.
The purchase of Nuttall's MQH Josie and Nuttall's MQH Desiree, initiated our Patterdale breeding program. One year later we bought our first stud dog, “Grip.” The Patterdale Terrier Club of America was founded a few years later. As total enthusiasts and now breeders, we immediately joined.
That same year, I contacted DogWorld magazine and changed the identification of the breed from fell (a type) to the newly recognized breed of Patterdale terrier.
In October 2009, a dog bred by us was featured on the cover of that same magazine in "Meet the Rare Breed Patterdale Terrier." MQH Pele CGC did the breed proud!
MQH Stella was pictured in the Howell Book of Dogs in 2007, as the representative for Patterdale terrier.
During the last thirty years, we have received a PTCA Certificate of Achievement and four of our dogs have gained the title of “Hall of Fame Terrier." The PTCA has graciously named a Perpetual Trophy for the Veterans Title after one of our greatest females, "Desiree." In gratitude, each year we support the PTCA National Show and Hunt.
Dogs that we bred or owned are in almost every domestic pedigree from breeders around the globe. Just to name a few of our buyers... Deadgame, Mason, Lostlake, J&J’s, Barnburner, CaliforniaCatchers, Bethune, Diggindeep, CMC, Subterra, 4L, Dunkel Meute, and SticksandStones, I apologize to others not listed.
Our dogs excel in the field and a variety of other performance tasks.
We are the breeders of PTCA and UKC Champions, Grand Champions, USR, UFR, UWP, and many other titles!
We bred the first OFA Patterdale terrier "MQH Paddington Bear" OFA 1997.
MQH Kennel has produced CGCs, champion weight pullers, dock divers, agility dogs, ring sports contenders, police and fire dogs, show champions, some of the finest hunting dogs, much of the best breeding stock, and wonderful companions!
We are members of PTCA (Patterdale Terrier Club of America), and the AWTA (American Working Terrier Assoc.)
